I cannot believe it's already December and also so close to Christmas!!! This month, the Island Batik Ambassador's challenge it is about Medallion Quilts, you know, a center block and borders and borders and borders (as many as you want) around!
My first project idea was a quilt with Poinsettias but I didn't have enough red fabric to 36" square size quilt... so change of plans and also this left me a little behind... because folks, the Poinsettia Quilt is everything. Well, it will come to life at some point next year so, no worries.
I don't know why I ended up with two precut bundles with majority shades of blues and greens, for Christmas... So the alternative plan was to forget a little bit about Christmas and focus on Winter, but I was totally obsessed with Christmas so I decided to go with a Winter subject that could also be Christmas related, the WinterDorf (the Winter Village in German).
The pattern was inspired by Wangen, the dorf I used to live in Switzerland. I miss Switzerland a lot during Christmas time. I miss going to Zürich center and the Bahnhofstrasse to see the lights and decorations and shopping, and drink glühwein, and eat Apfelchüechli with Vanillesauce and the kid's chorus singing "Oh Tannenbaum..." I know this year things are different there too because of the pandemic, but on the Winterdorf Quilt everything still the same ;)
Let's start talking about the fabrics! For this project I'm using "Just my Type Collection" designed by Tammy Silvers of Tamarinis and shipping this month to your local quilt shop! I'm also using Island Batik solid in white.
For piecing, I used Aurifil 50wt in white color 2021 (but you can easily coordinate with the shades of the fabric collection) and Schmetz Needles topstitch needle size 80/12. And of course, during my sewing time I totally fell in love with the little house blocks!
For quilting I used Aurifil 50wt in same color and two layers for Hobbs Heirloom® Premium Cotton Blend Batting, 80% cotton and 20% polyester. I decided to quilt small snowflakes in some of the blocks and made a quick tutorial video for you!
So, here we go, my WinterDorf Quilt!
