Make it Modern!
This month is the second industry partner spotlight event for the Island Batik Ambassador's 2019. The challenge is to use any Hobbs Batting from our stash to create a Modern Quilt.

The plan was to incorporate at least one of the characteristics of modern quilts as defined by the Modern Quilt Guild like the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space and alternate grid work.
Talking about the MQG, they just announced next QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge information and this year the theme is "Text" and the color palette is black, white and gray. Click here to read more about it!
Back to my quilt, my design inspiration was the most modern thing I ever heard these days (from my kids of course) "Mammy, are you not seeing... this thing is glitching!!!" Well... I don't know if you noticed already but, things can be "glitching" around of you too ;)
For the "Glitching Quilt" I decided innovate with the color palette too. Some many (many) years ago, my bff in São Paulo (Brazil) used to say "if you really want to get someone's attention use some orange, lime green or both together", her father is ("is" because some people are immortal, in my opinion) one of my favorite Brazilian Painters, Aldir Mendes de Souza.
Every time you are planning to work with dark fabrics or very colorful fabrics, you should also consider using DARK batting. It will make your quilting life so much easier because will not create light fiber lint on the quilt top during the quilting process.
Yes! You are not "seeing" things! I really did add a rock and roll version of the Island Batik Gecko to the quilting! I was too much negative space to play, almost irresistible :)
Happy quilting and see you in June ;)
