For ages now, I'm rehearsing to make a quilted coat. But I never found a pattern that really motivated me to try, for "style" reasons (because of course I will be wearing my coat very proudly on every.quilt.show) until I accidentally cross my path with Simplicity 8298 - Misses' Coat Pattern.

This pattern is perfect for quilters because it was designed for double-faced pre-quilted fabrics. It means QUILT SANDWICH guys!!! Perfect to quilt my own coat from scratch on my own longarm machine!!!

For the backing fabric I used Island Batiks Foundations Basics in gray, Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Blend Batting and Aurifil Thread 50wt color 2847 and some random golden metallic thread from my studio.

If you don't sew garments so frequently like me, you will probably need to "adapt" some of the quilting accessories from your studio. For example, use your(s) cat(s) like pattern weight...

“Garfield”, follow my Instagram account for updates!

After quilting your sandwich you will need to cut the templates of your coat and sew them together, following the instructions on the pattern. I was using my Bernina 790.

And to be honest, it was a very "doable" project, even with all my beginner friendly experience. The part that took me more time was wait for the buttons arrive, yep I didn't have cool buttons in the studio at the occasion (and now I have!).

And finally my version of the Misses' Coat, aka "Gandalf's Quilted Coat" with Island Batik! Slide the images by clicking the arrows!

Happy quilting and see you next month ;)
