Hello 2020 and this is my first official post as Island Batik Ambassador (Yay!). This year is already full of big plans and surprises, so I chose my January's Challenge as a perfect project for you to make and use to celebrate the entire year with me! (Believe me, we will have plenty of reasons!)

For the "Let's Get Scrappy Challenge" I designed special "Star Coasters", they still have a little twist of the last project in December, the "Up.Side.Down" mini quilt, but this time with light fabrics and another design... but the stripes are still there!

The design was inspired by a recollection of my childhood, the coasters probably still exist in some mother of pearl and golden metal version on my parents' or uncles' house and it was for sure the "contemporary accessory" to celebrate fancy ;)

I totally understand that everyone has their own way to "celebrate" so I did the Foundation Paper Piecing pattern (some knowledge of Foundation Paper Piecing is assumed) in two different sizes 6" or 4" finished. The bigger size works more like a mug rug and the smaller size like a real coaster.

Cut all the 1/2 yard in 1 1/2" stripes.

Cut all paper templates, be careful to not cut out the 1/4" sew allowance around the templates. (16 paper templates in total)

Start to piece the fabric stripes into the paper templates alternating the colors like the suggestion on the template.

Tip: for better results reduce your stitch length to 1.3 and it will be much easier to remove the paper at the end.

Tip: always use backing paper to protect light fabrics or batiks while pressing.

Piece templates A and B right fabric side facing together, then templates C and D also fabric side together.

Piece the two final templates, fabric side facing together creating "square" coaster top block.

Lay your top block coaster (right side facing you) with the square of batting, use some pins to secure it and stitch on the ditch following the piecing design from the block. Align the quilted block right side facing down to the background fabric square. Secure with pins and leaving a 2" open in one of the sides. Stitch 1/4" around the block, cut the excess fabric from the 4 corners and turn the block inside out. Press and stitch the 2" open by hand.

See you soon and Happy Quilting ;)
